Old Brewers' Row

By Matthew Nedostup

Old Brewers' Row

Today, most mass-market American beer is brewed in the Midwest, but this wasn't always the case. For most of America's colonial and national history, New York City was the center of brewing for the entire country.

The early Dutch settlers, who founded New Amsterdam at the southernmost tip of Manhattan Island, were the first to brew beer there. They quickly realized that the New York area has the perfect climate for growing the necessary ingredients of beer, particularly barley and hops. Beer was brewed for the local population, continuing after the English conquered New Amsterdam and renamed it New York, and after the American revolution.

In the 19th Century, large-scaling brewing took off in New York City, spurred by a rising population and the technological advances of the Industrial Revolution. Brooklyn became the heart of brewing for two primary reasons. Until the mid-19th century, local water sources were used in the brewing process. Manhattan, because it was settled faster, polluted its water earlier, leading to Brooklyn having a reputation for purer water than Manhattan. This changed in 1842 with the construction of the Croton Aqueduct, but by that point brewing in Brooklyn was deeply ensconced.

The other factor is the largest-scale settlement of German immigrants in Brooklyn. Germans became dominant in New York's brewing industry as soon as they started immigrating there, bringing their tradition and techniques from the old country. They introduced lager to America, which quickly became the preferred style of beer in the country, and they had a near-monopoly on its production. They settled in large numbers in specific neighborhoods, particularly Bushwick, Brooklyn, starting in the early-mid 19th century. This led to Bushwick becoming the home of Brewers' Row.

At its peak, Brewers' Row contained 14 active breweries within 14 square blocks, loosely bordered by Schole Street, Meserole Street, Bushwick Place, and Lorimer Street. Among the most notable were:
The Rheingold Brewery, which brewed Rheingold, New York's most popular beer.
The Huber Brewery, which brewed for nearly 100 years under owners Otto Huber and later Edward Hittleman. This brewery still stands as a large and well-preserved example of 19th century brewery architecture.

The Fallert Brewery, which closed under Prohibition. Also still standing, and a very beautiful example of the German round-arch style typical of breweries.

The Ulmer Brewery, a New York City designated historic landmark. Also an excellent example of the round-arch style, this building is special because it still features the original wrought-iron gates that lead into its central courtyard.

The standing breweries of Old Brewers' Row are a great day trip for any sightseer interested in brewing or history. They can easily be covered in an afternoon, leaving plenty of time to enjoy a few pints in nearby Williamsburg's many craft beer bars. They are also featured on the New York Beer and Brewery Tour.
Matt Nedostup is a tour guide for the New York Beer and Brewery Tour, a tasting and sightseeing tour of New York's beer culture. The tour includes all of the breweries mentioned above and more.

A New York Food Tour And Other Activities You Must Do In New York City

By Mark Etinger

New York Food Tours - NYC

If you're visiting New York City for the first time, it can be incredibly overwhelming creating an itinerary. Do you go for the ultra touristy attractions or do you try to find all those cool hidden spots that only native New Yorkers know about? If this is your first time, that's a tough decision. While some people really shy away from major tourist attractions, how can you not visit the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty? Here's what I recommend.

One "touristy" area I wouldn't pass up is Times Square. Despite being the busiest section of the city, it's become the poster picture of New York. It's the one spot that's lit up brighter than the Rockefeller Christmas Tree. The blinding lights, the big name restaurants, and Broadway so close by. After you're done photographing the skyscrapers, head over a few blocks and take in a Broadway show. It's just a must. Whether you opt for big hits like "Phantom of the Opera" or the "Lion King" or you look up a small off-Broadway show, it'll be quite a different experience from going to the movies!

Visit a museum. There are a number to choose from. The three largest and most famous include the MoMA, the MET, and the Museum of Natural History. The museum you choose depends on your personal tastes. If you're not into modern art, cross the MoMA off your list. If you have small children with you, the Museum of Natural History is kid friendly, especially the dinosaur section.

Weather permitting, a visit to Central Park will be a beautiful experience, especially during the spring and fall. Who could resist a picnic in this picture perfect park? You can also enjoy a boat ride on the lake, take a gander at the animals in the zoo, or even watch a performance at the theater. And how could I almost forget to mention a carriage ride! It's definitely a cheesy tourist thing to do that probably isn't very cheap, but it's New York!

One aspect of New York you cannot pass up is the food. But even native New Yorkers have trouble locating all the best spots. The best solution is to go on a food tour. A food tour will show you how real New Yorkers eat. Of course you'll probably end up at a few famous spots like Katz's Deli and Magnolia Bakery, but a good New York food tour will take you to hidden gems that Frommer's probably doesn't even know about. A food tour also always you to visit several food spots in a short amount of time so you won't feel like you're missing out.

Sidewalks of NY offers some of the best Flavors of New York food tours in the city. They'll take you to the hottest spots and places you might not have otherwise known about. Learn about the rich history of the city while you sample delicious foods. This is one New York food tour you can't pass up.

What to expect from a New York City Food Tour

http://www.cityfoodtours.com/newyork/new-york-food-tours-general-info.html

New York City is the epitome of civilization and cosmopolitan development. It is a melting pot
for many different cultures, races and human beings. You will not find a more exciting city than
New York City. From the buildings, to the people and the businesses present, New York City
offers you a larger than life experience. You will get an experience that will remain with you for
the rest of your memorable life.

One of the easiest ways to sample all the cultures present in the city is to take a food tour
throughout the various neighborhoods and districts of New York. Your pallet will get to
experience the fiery foods and mellow wines that have inspired many a poet, and have fed the
bellies of warriors on their way to battle.

For those interested in taking a food tour of the city, there is good news to hear. There are
many companies that have specialized in offering foot and bus food tours throughout the city.

They are not as expensive as you would expect them to be. You will only have to carry a few
dollars with you for the experience of a lifetime. Some of these tours are packaged and the
tour guides will take you to restaurants with preselected meals for all tourists. Other food tour
companies will only show you the restaurants and eateries available, leaving you to explore and
eat whatever you want on your own coin.

If you do not want to pay for your food tour, then having a group of friends who know the
city well will come in handy. This is especially advantageous for college students who have to
survive on a shoe string budget. You can expect a lot of excitement and a lot of good food at
very competitive prices on your food tour. This is due to the fact that the presence of many able
and competent competitors has driven the prices of food in the city to delicious lows. This has
made it possible for virtually anyone with a few dollars in their pockets to sample good food
and go to bed on a full stomach.

The following are some of the places that you can go to in New York to fire up your pallet:

1) Chinatown

New York City has the largest Chinese population in the western hemisphere. You will find
many interesting and exciting food menus in restaurants and street vendors concentrated in
a fifty block radius in Manhattan. This is Chinatown, and your food tour will not be complete
without a visit to this old and venerable neighborhood that is home to some of the most exotic
foods in the city.

2) The Lower East Side

From wonderful delicatessens such as the Katz shop to the ability to get four dumplings for one
dollar, the lower east side is the go to place for those on a shoe string budget. You will be able
to enjoy pickles (the lower east side was once a Mecca for pickles), candy and spinach knishes.
Fun and excitement are what awaits you on a typical New York City food tour.
